It may be possible to convert an RGB value into a paint mixture, but I doubt this will give you an accurate match. There are just too many variables between the original ship or model and the final digital image that you're taking the RGB numbers from. Things like lighting, camera, film, the printing process, and your scanner - any one of those things can cause a significant shift in color. If you start with an actual color photo of a White Star Line ship, you can add weathering/fading of the original paint and aging of the photograph to that list. Taking those factors into account, you're probably better off just eyeballing the mix until it "looks right".
Speaking of other White Star ships, it's too bad the current owners of the Cherbourg tender Nomadic (the last survivor of the White Star Line) don't maintain her in her origianal colors. What a great resource she would be.
: Can anyone convert RGB to a paint mixture? I have a crazy, hare-brained scheme in which someone uses photoshop to get the RGB color of the White Star Buff on a photo of either a later ship or the Britannic builder's model photos, or really any other source of true White Star Buff, and converts that into a paint mixture formula. I know it's crazy, but it just might work, Or not. Anyone?
