To add to the last answer given, even if it was full framed, it still wouldn't have been 'cropped'. James cameran filmed it using matte widescreen. Whate that means, is that he filmed it in full frame and set a black matte that contained the black bars on top of the entire movie. So actually, if you buy the full framed version on tape, you would be seing more of the film than the widescreen version. Just more of the top and bottem as the matte was removed for this full frame effect. Widescreen matting is just one way to film a movie in widescreen.
P.S. Although I mentione the tape, I still recommend getting the dvd just for the better quality :)
