Well here's the answer to your question, the mast is hollow, the width inside is 3' ft and can accomadate 1 person at a time and it has a small ladder for the men to get up to the crows nest. If you notice on the movie "TITANIC", when their doing a pass on the bow, you can clearly see that theres a oval shape hole on the mast. That is where the crows nest once was and the bell.
