It is hard enough just trying to figure out the configuration of the pipes in the first place. One would assume there would be a mechanism for "give", on the other hand, did they expand that much? In Architecture School we were taught to put expansion joints into long brick walls so the the brick would not crack, The movement of the brick is not that much, enough to cause problems but tiny relative to other parts of the building. The question is just how far did the ship expand, within the expansion joint. I would suggest not that much. If it were caused by the wave action on the ship, I would imagine that type of stress would have disasterous consequences on a ship. It may be more related to material expansions than mecahical actions. Scott, What do you think?
