Adam,
I believe Steve is right. They didn't just sit there surrounded by ice without the ability to move the ship. I believe they stopped (shut down) for the night but they did not shut off the boilers. They needed to have the means to propel themselves if for no other reason than to prevent themselves from drifting into ice (or vice versa). As for the rest of your argument, I agree with you. Even if they had started to Titanic immediately, it is doubtful they would have reached her in time to do much (if any) good. Unfortunately for whatever reason (that covers a LOT of territory) they didn't make an effort until the next morning.
