Mark:
I had planned on making a clear decal on which the panes will be black. It will be applied over a solid white roof. From a distance the panes look black on photos. The dome underneath is round and therefore inaccurate anyway so making clear panes forces a scratchbuilt oval dome. This is one area where I think I will compromise.

: : In looking at the Britannic plan of the dome it appears that:

: : 1. The dome itself was identical in dimensions to the base of one of the funnels.
: : The funnel dimensions are given as: 24.5 ft. long axis by 19ft. short axis in
: : the Thomas Andrews notebook..
: : I haven't made precise measurements but it appears that the skylight cover
: : itself had roughly 6 inches clearance all around. Therefore the cover would
: : be 25.5 ft. long fore and aft by 20ft. port to starboard. I don't know how that
: : squares with the Hahn plans or the PE sets but I believe it to be accurate.
: : I will try drawing the panes within these dimensions to identify the pane
: : dimensions. The height of the cover on the rigging plan appears to be 6ft.
: : I am seriously thinking about making an accurate sized GSC and
: : the panes with a decal instead of a PE part.

: I considered doing that before the Nicholai parts came out and I may still do that. One thing that you might consider doing is instead of using decals to represent the panes themselves, use decals to represent the frames. Make the cover "roof" from clear plastic. You could spray a decal sheet white and then either cut out the individual openings, or cut strips and lay them across each other to represent the frames.

: The "one-piece" option would be difficult to work with but would give the neatest result if done properly. The layered strips would be easiest to align (assuming you marked out the positions), but I don't know how noticable the layering would be where the strips crossed.

: Food for thought.
