There is a photo in "Titanic: An Illustrated History" that attempts to answer that question. It shows the Olympic either raising or lowering lifeboats. The implication was that they were sent back to Southampton with Olympic.
I think this is the most plausible explanation. As to their use after that, all the ships in the White Star Fleet would need additional lifeboats so I would assume they were used on other ships. White Star did not want to keep this tragedy alive by retaining the lifeboats as memorials of the tragedy. Once the nameplates were removed their identity would be gone forever when they were installed on other ships.

: I knew thre was another question I wanted to ask the other day. What actually became of the lifeboats that were brought to New York on the Carpathia? Legend has it that workers were set to snding the name "Titanic" off the boats the very morning they arrived, but what happened after that? There have been wild rumors thaat I have heard over the years, including that they were actually used on the Olympic to make her meet new regulations. Is there any written record of what became of them?
