I had always thought of that as possible, that the Californian could have responded much quicker to Titanic's distress than even Carpathia. It's my personal opinion that Captain Lord was in the wrong concerning his role in the disaster, that he should have made an effort to rescue the survivors, at the very least wake the radio operator to raise the ship firing distress rockets.
In truth, Californian would have taken at least an hour to get underway, considering she was stopped cold for the night. They would have had to reheat the boilers, as well as the engines. Yet, had they tried, they probably would not have been vilified in later years.
