I've just finished reading that interesting book, which I'm sure you have read as well, "The Riddle of Titanic" which deals with the conspiracy theory that Olympic was substituted for Titanic after the serious damage done to her in the 'Hawke' collision, for a massive insurance scam. It's all very hard to swallow but is well worth a look! One of the author's bits of 'evidence' was that the Olympic was more seriously damaged than was let on. It's stated that the impact in the area of the starboard wing prop shaft was so severe that the starboad engine was shifted on it's base and possibly sustained crankshaft damage, and even the integrity of the keel itself was compromised, and that the shaft and prop awaiting fitting to the Titanic was hurriedly fitted to Olympic during the repairs in Belfast. Does anyone know if this was true?
The author then surmises that the ship at the bottom of the Atlantic is in fact the original Olympic because of the photographic evidence showing the number 401 on the wreck's starboard propeller blade. If anyone hasn't read this book it's well worth a look I think, because even if it is all fiction, there are many interesting points and details, especially with regard to the porthole arrangement on the upper bow area that really makes you think "I wonder?"!!
