Scott: Perhaps an inspection of Yachts made at the time would be in order, or to talk to the maintenance people at Cunard? People use Southern Yellow pine in Texas for all sorts of construction and when exposed to the elements, (heavy rain, sun, hail and wind storms) just a short while it tends to go gray, slightly.
On my ships, I was just trying to get the color to look like wood, never mind the shade. And from my experience on ships it was a light color, mainly to reflect sunlight, since steel ships heat up so fast on a cloudless day.
