Very good answers, Scott! Only thing is that "contributing" membership is now the basic membership level. The lower level is still available but it is now strictly limited to students, etc. where before anyone could enroll at that level. There are higher levels as well, but they just cost more but you don't get anything extra except the glow of knowing you gave them more money for their projects.
As Karen Kamuda put it to me when we had a rather negative discussion by snail mail a few years ago -- all you get from your membership fee is a subscription to the magazine. You really are not a *member* of anything in a really meaningful sense of the word. However, the magazine (The Commutator) is well worth the price of paying the *dues* every year and this is true even with the rather hefty increases that have come about over the last 4 years.
