Deck and smokestack lighting

I have recently decided that I am going to light my Titanic model. I am leaning towards putting a fluorescent bulb in the hull and cutting out the middle of all decks above so the light passes throught the promenade and boat decks. After rewatching Titanic, I noticed that the smokestacks were lighted as well. Has anyone attempted to light these by drilling a hole in the deck and placing some clear sprue in the hole to light the stacks. I'm in no way an electrician but I want to know how you guys have tackled this. I also am curious about the deck lighting on the boat deck. Will the same technique work?
