Scale ship needs to be big enough to handle scale "seas" by
John,
Other than for use in a backyard pool, I would
not suggest building an R/C Titanic at less than
1/200 scale. I'd even consider poking that up
to 1/150 for a model of 70.62 inches length.
Even at this scale, the model's breadth would
only be 7.36 inches wide, with the bow rising
just 4.80 inches above the waterline.
The 1/350 model's freeboard at the stem isn't
much over two inches, making the typical pond
ripples encountered on any day but a dead
calm the equivalent of 50 foot seas or more.
Adding to this is the difficulty of providing suf-
ficient propulsive power at this scale, with scale
propellers, to allow the model to make headway
and retain control in anything but a flat calm.
Regards,
Scott
