Mark:
In the photo you mention taken from Olympic's fourth funnel it just shows the aft stokehold vent because the Olympic didn't have this stairway extension up to the boat deck. Also the photos taken of the Olympic in this area (there is one that was taken from port and one from starboard) that show just deck and no stairwell.

: When I went to the Memphis exhibition last summer, the large model they had on display also had the stair cover as you describe it, with the door facing to starboard. That was one of those areas that I specifically wanted to check out. Most of the genreal arrangement plans show a stairway back there, and I always wondered where the entrance was, since it sits right in front of (of aft of) the stokehold vents.
: The problem is that the Shipbuilder book has a photo of that exact area (on Olympic), but it was taken from the port side and the place where that door should be is blocked by a ventilator, so you can't see anything. The gen arr plans of Olympic that are included with the book don't even show a stair well on the boat deck, but it does show it starting at A deck and going down to E deck.
: How about the photo in the Bonsall book that was taken from the top of the fourth funnel of 'O' looking forward? I don't have this book, so I can't remember how much you can see. Is there any indication of it there?
