Bob:
This is an mystery to me too. Until Cameron's
book came out, it never even crossed my mind
that there was such a thing as a port rigging
plan. I've tried to get some feedback from H&W-
TS but you know how hard it is to get any info
from them. I'll probably have to spend another
small fortune on yet another phone call.
I've look at that photo of the plan on pg.16-17
for the better part of two hours, compairing it to
the copy of the 1"=12'-0" scale starboard rigging
plan, and as far as I can tell, the rigging is sym-
metrical about the longitudinal centerline of the
vessel, though admittedly, it is difficult to read
everything on the book photo, and part of the
plan was cut off on pg. 17. The starboard plan
also has notation on features which state whe-
ther they are to be added both to both sides or
not which would seem to elimnate the need for
a port side rigging plan.
As you point out, there are a number of errors
regarding the placement and number of port-
holes (the 3-3-3 pattern of the port side restau-
rant windows, for example). Also, the scale is not
the same. This indicates two separate drawings
and not a doctored reverse tracing (reducing
and enlargement of engineering drawings in the
drafting room was still well in the future in 1912;
things were either traced or drawn, always by
hand. How spoiled we engineers are today with
computer drafting software!).
Just to complicate things further, H&W lists a
rigging plan for Olympic as well (which side....
who knows?). I wonder what could possibly be
different between the two ships other than port-
holes and windows, which have no bearing on
the rigging!
Regards, Scott
PS - Bob, I sent an Email to Debbie and Andy at
H&W asking for specific info and prices on a
number of drawings, indicating I am quite serious
about purchasing some or all on the list but that
I first wanted to know exactly what I was paying
for. In that list I asked for info on the Bridge
Deckhouse drawings you mentioned. I also
asked them to tell me if any drawings exist for
the bridge/wheelhouse complex of either ship
if that is not what is on that drawing. I'll let you
know if I get any info. Here's hoping....
