As Bob said, the evidence is overwhelming on the gold band on the Titanic. Two excellent references I can think of right now (without my materials in front of me since I am at work) is the Fr. Francis Browne photo of him boarding (you can see the gold band along the side, esp. at the 2nd class open gangway door), and the photo taken of Capt. Smith peering down from the bridge. You can see this band along the base of the superstructure and into the well deck area.
