Hi,
I have looked through all photos I can find of the stern, (that is only a fraction of the lot of course), and knowing that this half round iron covering the plate joints are raised perhaps 3-5", I am leaning to the fact that Jason's "theory" might prove right. But one thing is for sure, on (other) ships of that era with the same stern design, this joint cover are more often painted than not painted in another colour than the hull.Usually white or yellow.
