1) Painting the black on the hull is not so much for the color but rather for the gloss. I left mine the molded black color but overcoated the entire hull (after painting the reddish bottom and the white top) with semigloss lacquer.

2) I would think you would paint the hull after drilling the portholes, to help hide any imperfections.

3) The gold stripe between the black and the white on the hull goes all the way around. The stripe around the stern, that has been argued and discussed on this message board, is a second stripe that is lower (at the angle of the stern plates). The color of this second stripe is uncertain.
