The deck planking is unmodified Minicraft parts.
I just painted them with three colors: Floquil
Mud (a paint) and Floquil Driftwood & Natural
Pine (stains). The process isn't difficult, mainly
air-brushing on the Mud and then drybrushing
streaks of Natural Pine fore-and-aft in plank-width
random streaks using a fine tipped brush.
All three colors are part of the Floquil
model railroad paint range - I have no idea if
comparable paints are available in other brands.
The online photos give only a hint of the
actual effectiveness of this process. You need to
see the original prints to appreciate how realistic
it can be. I've had people at the IPMS/USA show
look at the model up close and ask me in all
seriousness if I'd made all-new wooden decks
for the ship. I guess I must have gotten it
pretty close!
