Bruce:
On the aft mast there were two "docking lamps" on the port and starboard side of the mast about midway up the mast. As far as the rigging plans go there is no indication of a white masthead light like the one on the foremast. The speculation about the structure being a conduit instead of a support is based on the fact that the masts went several decks below. Plus, they had external support in the form of wire stays. The aft mast was supported as adequately as the foremast and it had no structure like this. This doesn't leave too many other possibilities. This structure was rectangular in cross section and is shown clearly in the photo taken by Father Browne which is reproduced on p. 39 (lower left photo) of "Titanic: An Illustrated History".

: I appreciate your response Bob.

: There are so many questions to read and so many doubles that I find myself getting lost in time. Anyway, is this support round or square? does anyone out there know of a better picture that may exist?

: There seems to be a question of lights on the aft mast. If there is a light, why would the builders need to string a support across like that?
