Kevin,
I've just spent a few weeks drilling, painting and
filling the portholes. It's a huge job.
If I might offer some advise...
I think that you might run into a few problems if
you don't drill all the way through. Painting the
brass rim is a tough enough job when you can get
the brush all the way through the porthole. You'll need a really
steady hand if you only drill part way through.
Also if you drill all the way through you can put the
Krystal Clear in from inside the hull. This is a big help
because it can get pretty messy if you are not 100%
accurate. As suggested in the Krystal Clear
instructions I totally filled the portholes pushing
the KC through with a toothpick until the KC was
flush with the outer hull.
The only problem I found was you can't actually see
the Krystal Clear when it is in place, it doesn't act
like glass unless you get a powerful light source behind
the portholes, it just looks black because of the depth
of the plastic. The up side of this was when the KC
dried it shrank slightly leaving only a thin 'rim' of
brass paint giving the hull a thinner appearance.
The final result is well worth the effort as the all the
portholes catch the light and give the hull a little
more life.
I hope that this is of some help.
