I saw the programme on the Discovery Channel (U.K.) a couple of weeks back.
They got the piece (which was lying in the debris field - it was not removed from the remaining superstructure) and raised it to the surface. A couple of cruise ships were there to witness the event (one of them carrying two survivors), but they had to head for port when a storm came along.
That same storm caused the ropes that were holding the bit of hull to the back of the ship to snap as they tried to pull it on board, and the almost salvaged section plunged to the bottom of the ocean a few kilometres away from the rest of the ship.
It would appear it was not to be. The salvage attempt was abandoned.
I also heard from a work colleague that they were selling bits of the hull in Chicago - does anyone know if this is true? I hope it is not. titanic should not be turned into paperweights.
Regards,
Stephen.
