Seriously, 1, 2, or 4 pound test line works really well and is widely available. They even sell it in the drug/variety stores in my area (San Francisco Bay area). It costs about $4 for 50 yards - a lot cheaper than the hobby shop. You can use CA glue to put it place and then a small heat source to shrink it tight (careful not to make it too tight.) It's not as brital as stretched sprue and a lot finer than thread. And it's definitely easier than trying to teach a speder to do rigging.
