: Mike:
: You appear to be right about the hydrants. Their number and location? I haven't got a clue.
: The best rendering of the appearance of the hydrants on the forward well deck appear in a painting by Marschall in the softcover juvenile book: "Exploring the Titanic" by Ballard. On p.44
: the Marschall painting is almost exactly the same as the one of the bridge area at night that appears in "Titanic: An Illustrated History". The main difference is that this is a daylight rendition. There are a few errors that Marschall later corrected in the night version. The hydrants next to the "mushroom" vent are different than the type on the boat deck. They appear to be a pedestal style approximately 3 ft. high. There is a spigot for connection to a hose and what appears to be a horseshoe shaped handle that was probably lifted to start the water flow. These are definitely not vents.
: Have you calculated the size of the boat deck hydrants in 1/350 scale? By the way, good eye.

Hello Bob, thanks for the compliment. The strain on the eyes the past couple of days looking at minute details on Titanic photos and paintings is taxing to say the least. Our model building table consists of paints, parts, tools, and books everywhere. Ha :)
In our quest to place as much detail as possible on the models to capture it historically has lead to intensive book exploring, picture/photo comparing, then hounding the good folks here on Sean's site with questions to clear up areas we have been unable to ascertain for ourselves. Its fun though.

Anyway I used Roy Mengot's recommendations in his guide concerning the vents, now called deck hydrants. We assembled them from sprue and microrod but they don't look exactly like the page 44 painting. We also added them to both sides of the aft well deck's mushroom vent as suggested to do in Roy's guide. Ours look like mini-mushrooms painted black and about the size they appear compared to the big mushroom vent in the Exploring book picture. As for the boatdeck hydrants I know there is at least two on each side of the boatdeck and probably more. Does your deck plans show them?
