If such a ladder existed on the aft mast but not on the foremast, that would be consistent with the opinion, expressed by someone here earlier, that the foremast was hollow (at least up as far as the crow's nest) with an internal access ladder, whereas the aft mast was solid (or at least didn't have an internal access).
