I see the structure you're wondering about. The
only two things I can think of would be:
1. An electrical conduit housing cable for the mast
lights (this seems the more likely of my two
theories)
2. A brace to dampen mast vibration - possibly
caused by harmonics set up by the engine and
propeller vibration which are closer to this
mast than the foremast.
In one of Ken Marschall's paintings, he has a
branch running off this "conduit" taking a 90
degree dive immediately forward of the mast. But in
other paintings, and in several photos, the conduit
goes straight into the mast with no branches. I
think this is the correct configuration.
