I have lit the ship up with on flurescent tube down the length of the hull and 18 tiny bulbs around the ship (mainly in rooms) I have bought lots of fibre optic, both thin and normal, to poke in every porthole and above many roofs (as overhead lights) You can also use the small fibre as lamps under the docking bridge and in the many doors around the ship.
The 'grain of wheat' bulbs that i have used are quite good, they produce virtually no heat at all and are cheap. You can buy and ERTL Fibre optic lighting kit with all the stuff you need except 1.0 mm fibre for the portholes.
I whent into such detail as the lamps on the crains and the many scattered lights on the Boat deck. It makes the model look much, much more real; as i wanted.
Ask any follow ups if your in doubt.
