Upon further reflection I may have misunderstood what you were describing. Directly in front of and behind the funnels there seem to be flush ventilation shafts that probably have some sort of gratings over them. Given their location I doubt if they were wood. I have never seen a clear photograph of them except a photograph taken from near the top of the fourth funnel of the Olympic looking forward. At the base of the aft aspect of the third funnel there appear to be possibly the possible ventilation shafts described above.
