I plan to light the model with a combination of fiber optics and small lights (don't quite have it worked out), but for drilling out the portholes, I used a Dremel drill at the slowest speed with a 1/16" bit for the larger holes, a 3/64th bit for the mediums (there are a few that are smaller than the large ones but not as small as the smallest ones) and a 1/32" for the smallest holes.
The drilled out holes look like the model came that way! Works really well.
I plan to use fiber optics in the smallest portholes and general small lighting in the larger ones. I'm not sure how this will work yet, so I'm going to play around with it.
