: I already bought this system, it's very simple, you just need about US$6 for this.
I have a 1/350 kit and as you thought, I wanted to light my ship and also saw the same problem you did, there fore I bought a FLUORESCENT BULB (there are sizes that will fit into the hull, and those won't heat up) that is as long as the ship and will ilumminate all the windows along the hull :the ones in the middle as the ones in the front and as the ones in the back; and with a little of holes among the upper decks you could this incredible light into the upper decks and therefore windows of the ship!!!.
(I'll explain this in other reply)

You may think it's too difficult, but believe me: you won't regret it, because it will light the maximum possible the ship and with drilling the upper decks there will be enough light to lite those too.
The system maybe look complex, but with any electrician help you will find these very easy to do. Also you need to drillings in the bottom of the hull to conect the bulb to an external power supply.
Please let me know your results, and i'll tell you how to use this ligh to light up the upper decks.
