I want to make a clarification on my findings. It seems that some of the cowls had a steel screen inside with a density like the screens seen in the big air trunk ducts. This was intended more to keep out birds and debris. One cowl that had a screen like this, off the top of my head, was the 30" cowl fore of the boat deck 2nd class entrance. The screens I see in the other cowls (that have them) appear to be made of a textile material product. These screens were like stereo speaker covers and were used to keep out bugs and coal dust during coaling. The statement I made about people throwing crap in the cowls was in jest however I'm sure it should be taken seriously as that could have been a problem. Imagine a bird or some other item like a toy spinning top being thrown in a cowl and hitting the fan inside.
( most of this information was given to me by Scott Andrews )
