I seem to recall that there's an artist's rendering of the dome and staircase in the Shipbuilder article that shows the center of the dome with the light.
That may be the source of Ken's paintings. I don't think he had to have anything special. Like Bruce said, they were fairly common.
There are plenty of photos that show the pattern. It wouldn't be difficult to get a good approximation. The only real challenge is getting the actual dimensions of the dome itself. Just how elliptical was it? The only thing I know of that shows the outline is a dotted line on the Britannic rigging plan (overhead). That's hardly enough to go by. I personally think it was a "fatter" ellipse than that.
Once you get the dimensions, you can divide it up by the number sections seen in the pics, and add the patterns. A CAD program could make it a snap.
