David,
this is a question that really only you can answer. Like you, I have been faced with either restoring or buying entirely new. On one hand, I cannot afford the $120 it costs for me to go to my nearest store and buy a Lusitania model, but on the other I could, through time and effort and supplies, overshoot the cost of buying a new one, in restoration efforts.
But, this is an opportunity to become a more skilled modeler. It should be somewhat easy with a little patience to take an Xacto knife and use the blade and gently crack the seams of the decks and model parts. Sure, some areas might be glued too good to remove at all. Those you would have to decide whether to leave as is, restore carefully with the parts glued together (vents glued tight to decks, etc.) or suck it up and break the part and refabricate with putty or plastic. Or, there's starting fresh, plunking down $100 and living on ramen noodles for a few weeks! :-/
This is a true and understandable dilemna. You're looking at genuine effort either way, but if I had to make the decision on my projects, I'd save up a little and repurchase the model.
I hope this helps a little bit...
Regards,
Dan
P.S. Hopefully someone more qualified than I about the Lusitania color scheme can help on your question below.
