I found thin brass, copper and aluminum rods at very thin diameters in local hobby shops. Each size smaller fits inside the next larger size. All of my masts are going to be built from these metal rods, and will cut them to size getting progressively smaller towards the top.
In one of the archived dicussion boards, there is discussion of how to make stronger masts from various materials. I am going to smooth the transition from one rod size to the other with putty, then sand and paint my homemade masts. I think you should look into making them.
