Not all products are available everywhere. Sprue provides for immediate access to material that can be fashioned quickly to serve many purposes. I personally used it several times on the model in conjunction with Evergreen products and was able to manufacture parts that were not commercially available. It is a good back-up or even primary method to make many model parts.
