: John
: I am currently working on a 1:570 scale Revell model too. I have been at it for about 2 months. I collected a lot of information and diagrams from various sources and have still found it very difficult to figure out where to put some of the decals.
: The Revell model is a very simplified version, in fact, the "A" deck piece is totally wrong. It is molded as rectangular when it should be shaped more like the profile of the Boat Deck.
: Bruce labeled the various areas on the decals but you do need to try and locate photos or diagrams to figure out exactly where they should go. In many cases I guessed about placement of the decals.
: The 1:570 is a hard one to detail, because in the 1:350 the windows are molded, in the 1:570, there is nothing to indicate where any windows should go at all. In that respect, the 1:570 is harder to work on than the 1:350, because there is so much missing that you have to fill in. It is also a very small scale, so I have spent HOURS placing my decals, and pouring over photos and diagrams that I could find.
: One of the biggest helps I had was when I downloaded the set of instructions from David Cotgreave on the Titanic modelers website. This is a copy of the instructions for building the 1:350 model and it has diagrams that really help to show where some of the window layout should be.
: I don't know if I have encouraged you or discouraged you, I do know that I wish I had built a 1:400 or 1:350 first, because then I would know much more about placement of windows due to the accuracy of the larger kits. Keep plugging along, I know I am.
: By the way, I drilled holes in the boat deck and in every funnel for all of the rigging that I will install. That was another aggravating job. Try to find the exact location placement of the guy wires! It isn't easy. But I will give you a hint on the funnels. Go to the following website: www.academyhobby.com/maine.htm and you will see the precise layout for the funnel guy wires.
: The other thing you can do is look at the models other people have built. Go to that section on this website and look at the models other people have built, there are enough photo shots to give you a good idea where some of the windows should be placed.
: I really think the 1:570 is one of the hardest ones to detail because it lacks so much. It is a very basic kit.
: Good Luck
Doug - Thanks for the information! I really appreciate it! Also thanks for the info on funnel guy wire placement.
It's a real challenge to find these locations exactly!! It's a big help!!
