I also believe that they didn't get too close to the stern to see if the letters are still visible on the fantail. The knuckle between the aft ports and the main hull, as seen in KM's paintings, has a lot of long rusticles. I also think Ballard said the current made too close an examination dangerous. That may also be why Ballard's teams did not find the props under the stern.
