Bob,
: I think you have made a very good educated guess.
: A couple of other pieces of evidence to consider:
: 1. Look at the enpaper plan of Titanic in Triumph and Tragedy. It looks like they placed a door very far forward on the starboard side.
: 2. Look at the Titanic rigging plan. If I'm not mistaken, I think they place a door in the same area.
Yes you are correct. I have never seen a picture of this door since it is always hidden by life boats but the T&T endpaper plans are pretty accurate when it comes to doors with a very few exceptions.
: The Olympic plan in Anatomy shows a 35" Sirocco in this area. These big 35 inchers were like those with the big curl vents near the forward two funnels. It is probably like the ones that duct into the bulkhead on the port and on the aft of the deckhouse under #2 funnel. Whatever it is we can definitely see ducting into the deckhouse under #4 funnel on Olympic.
You are correct again. After I wrote that response I looked at the aft overhead shot of the Olympic in "Sisters" and there is a big curl vent mounted fore of the hot are drums. This fits the dimensions shown in the Anatomy plans.
: Could this be a possible arrangement?: Everything as you said with the aft three windows (screens)
: then the duct for the hot air ventilator forward of them, then a window, then the Sirocco duct, then a second window forward of the duct, then a door forward of this window?
Yes, I agree. The doors on each side open to different rooms. The port side to a stairwell and the starboard to the fore fan room.
: Since Mike Pell has been the door/window maven maybe he'll weigh in. Maybe I just ruined his weekend with this question. :-)
You certainly opened my eyes on this one. I never gave that aera much attention. For what it's worth, the Titanic did have the exact same arrangment on the port side as the Olympic. The pictures are in the Bonsall book for the Olympic and the first release of Walter Lords "The Night Lives On" for the Titanic. maybe someday a picture will turn up of at least the Olympic's arrangements. There are photos out there that could show this area if I could only get my hands on them and if they are clear enough to enlarge. I'm working on it but some of these places are nearly impossible to communicate with over the internet. I am going to die trying to prove that there were flat roof vents over the foreward end of the #4 funnel deckhouse. This is the part that protrudes fore. There should be some kind of cover that allows light and air in. I've been looking at other White Star ships to get an idea of how a flat vent cover would look so I have an idea.
