Sean didn't post the final answer but the material used to stop squeeks in the walls was flannel, as in flannel shirts and PJs.
The large general note on the promenade plan from H&W says, "Notice: In way of all webs, corners, expansion joints, fore end of deckhouse and wherever creaking is thought liable to take place, one ply of flannel is to be inserted between iron connections."
Apparently the area around the aft expansion joint on Olympic creaked and squeeked because there was a special note for Titanic that made a point of the joints being "flanneled."
