I usually use dry brushing on my models. This involves a bit of time and patience as you apply the paint of a suitable rust brown colour etc in very small amounts on the brush ie almost dry with very little pressure, almost none. You very carefully apply the line of rust bit by bit down in the way you want it to run also use a couple of shades of browns and even a tinge of orange to help it look right. After a lot of time and coats you can really achieve some good looking results but after reading all these directions I think I am going to try the artists chalks/crayons next time for a comparison.
