: How do you model rust marks and coal stains on scale models? I thought about using a cloth to apply paint but I'm not sure. I want to a) Eventually add rust marks below the anchors on my new Titanic and b) Give my Britannic a realistic coal dust colouring, on photos it appears to be absolutely filthy.

Hi Russ. Steve and I used a rust red and brown paint combo to make the rust stains seen below the anchors, on fairleads, seams etc. The catch is to dilute the paint so the pigment becomes more like a wash and then just apply it with a brush at selected locations. Coal dust could be achived by using graphite shavings from a pencil sharpen. Use a clear spray on the model and when wet blow the graphite dust into the paint and let dry. If you wish to seal the powder, you can then re-seal with another application of clear coat finish. Another method I had read about for making the soot around funnels was to mix flat black paint with baby powder and then paint this mixture around the tops of the funnels. This is said to create the smoke effect though I have not got that far yet on my model, but I will be doing it. Cheers, Mike
