Dan is right but the picture of the stairs in that position seen in the Marriot book are only construction stairs. There is a gate there and the area of the railing running perpendicular to the deck has not been cut out yet where the stairs would finally end up. I seem to remember seeing a picture of a later Olympic where crew were using the stairs seen on the angled part of the deck . I believe that even though the stairs were perhaps permanently moved outboard as they appear in pictures the inboard connections and possibly the gates were left for temporary placement of removable stairs. What does this mean? Nothing, Dan is right. The modeler shouldn't have to worry about it but it's a neat little trivia piece. Don't forget that the stairs up to the poop deck and the ones up to the forecastle were removable to facilitate cargo loading.
