As you said in your mail. The duct running from the cover aft to the air trunk is on the deck, not suspended.
I've never seen any evidence that there were port holes in the fore end of the staircase cover. Finding the ones on the aft end was a complete fluke. I don't know why they were installed only on the aft end. In one of my original construction photos, the Titanic's cover is still steel black and unpainted. I can see no port holes.
I'll look into it more.
