Smooth Cast is a urethane based liquid plastic. I believe the commercial resin is polyester based.
My opinion the Smooth Cast is superior for a couple of reason. It's not as brittle as the polyester, Faster working time (15 to 20 min de-mold), sands and mills better and a it has the consistency of water. The 300 is also white, which also accepts pigments well.
