: : Hey Scott,
: : Your message was fascinating and a real useful bit of info. Have you got the Bodmin Whistle Museums' address or 'phone number?
: : I only live about half an hour away from Bodmin and would dearly love to see the Mauretania set, especially after seeing Saturdays ceremony!
: : Thanks
: : Malc.
: I would be interested in seeing the Bodmin set aswell. Also, Scott, do you know which funnel the set RMST Inc have came from?
: Regards,
: Stephen.
Malc and Stephen,
Mr. Humble's museum is located at 80 Fore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall, PL31 2HR. There is no phone given in the information I have, but you may be able to obtain that from a local directory or telephone operator. He has an interesting advertisement on the web at http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/gary.peach/whistle.htm. The Mauritania set can be seen in one of the photos given.
As to which funnel that whistle came from, it is either number one or two, as the whistles on three and four were dummies. RMS T points to the whistle set on the number one funnel in a photo on their site, but unless there has been some sort of marking discovered on the whistle set as to it's fitted location, there would be no way to tell which of the two operating sets this one is, as they were both identical. The only marking I on that set that I know of are those indicating the proper location of each bell on the manifold.
I hope you guys are able to get a look at, and better yet, a listen to these whistles. If you do, your experience should be much closer to their real sound than what folks heard in St. Paul. When collectors of these whistles get together for a "whistle blow", they often do it at a train museum where there is an operational steam locomotive, the boiler of which is used to provide steam for the whistles, which are connected via a pipe rigged for this purpose. Unlike the event in St. Paul, the people blowing the whistles have to wear hearing protection to avoid permanent injury, as the whistles are operated at their designed output.
Regards,
Scott
