Don't feel too bad, I built two scratch-builts last year, and it took the majority of the year to do it. The thread issue has been covered in the past. Anything from thin guitar string to thin fishing line has been suggested. The general consesus is that if you can use something that is stiff, and looks proper for the scale, then you are alright. If you can get consistant thicknesses with the stretched sprue, and get it thin enough, go for it. It won't go anywere and won't sag.
