There's an out of print book called "Titanic in a New Light" that has an excellent pic of one (pg 81). The bad news is that the book is out of print. Here's the particulars:
"Titanic in a New Light"
Dr. Joseph MacInnis
Date: 1992
publisher: Thomasson-Grant, Inc
ISBN: 1-56566-021-8
This was the companion book to the "Titanica" IMAX film and is worth finding in Library or used book store. Although they spend WAY too much time on the technology of getting the pics (sound familiar? RMST were the ones being focused on), the wreck photos that are presented are the best available.
They used some HEAVY duty lighting, and everyting is shown in true color. Some of the highlights include:
A GREAT photo of the anchor windlasses with the linkages to the "brake wheels".
A two page spread of one of the steam winches (albeit rustcicle entombed).
Part of the officers deckhouse and a boat winch.
The afore mentioned hydrant on the boat deck. This may be the same one as seen in the Ballard book, but the design of the hydrant is crystal clear. You can see the pipe feeding it under the boat deck too.
Which brings up another point. Mike, have you ever thought to look at any pictures taken from the promenade deck? There's lots of plumbing in the ceiling, maybe we can trace the hydrants from below too. I don't know about sorting out the drains for the "gutters" though, if there are any. Just a thought.
