: Russ,
: Yes this is indeed somewhat hilarious. It would make for a great preservation idea, but on the other hand, you know my thoughts on disturbing the wreck. I would wholeheartedly support, however, a full ROV examination of the passable companionways of the bow section - for me, exploring the rooms and seeing the furniture still somehwat intact, the columns, doors, and paneling is fascinating that it's all still there. We would always have the images of Titanic in death, though the wreck itself would be long gone. The only thing I would currently support being raised is the bags of mail in the holds. I do not support the jewelry and personal effects raising - that seemed to be pursuit of treasure hunting and greed. The efforts of the mail clerks to save the mail should be paralleled by saving those bags and their contents.
: As for this airlock theory - sounds good, I've even thought of this idea in passing over the years, but what would you do once you secured the site? An airlock to the wreck - hmmm. Build a narrow silo 12,460 feet down, make it pressure proof, feasible to ascend and descend (have you ever tried to climb more than 500 feet of stairs - whew!). Then this airlock needs support to keep from collapsing when buffeted by waves. Then the giant 100x500 foot atmosphere room to enclose the wreck, preservation process, etc. One would think that by the time this could be reasonably constructed and applied, the wreck would be collapsed.
: Get what's left of Titanic on digital film, and let her rest in peace.
I agree. Bob Ballard's ROV idea is great - let everyone access the wreck wherever they are. On the other hand Mr. Tulloch would probably charge per second to see a tiny scrap of the hull.
Get as many films and photos of her as we can while she's still intact!
Russ :-)
