The wood used in the construction of the leads-
man's platforms was teak, which is unpalatable
to most marine organisms. Not much of this mat-
erial was used in Titanic's construction. There
have been a few other wooden objects found
more or less intact in the debris field. All have
been found to be teak. Due to this wood's nat-
ural ability to ward off vermin, it decays slowly as
indicated by the remains of the leadsman's plat-
forms. Another wood likely to be in good condi-
tion would be the lignum vitae used as a lining
and watertight packing around the propeller
tailshafts.
