I think I like your idea much better than backing with a plastic sheet for many reasons but the main one would be based on what makes a simulation of a thing take on realism? Porthole glass is very thick stuff and is in fact a part of the actual port window itself. It is not something that is nailed up in back of it. When the porthole door is unlocked and opened the glass fills the frame and has a certain convex shape to it. The clearfix would seem to lend that effect very well. Think you just saved me from making a big mistake. As a matter of fact everything we use in day to day life is designed and made the way it is for a practical purpose. A good model of a ship then should look very much like the real thing on a small scale because as much of the actual ship's features have been well thought over and applied.
